God owns my life/business???? | God Intersections

With my life being all about exploring God Intersections in peoples lives and businesses I have a wonderful view of God working in folks lives.  The peace people feel surrounding the “is God in my life question” appears largely linked to their ability to give their lives to God (thereby generating another block of questions like “How do I do that?).  As I’ve pondered these concepts, my Current Best Thinking led me to some questions:

  1. Who is the owner of my life/business?
  2. How would I know by watching what I do?
  3. If God is not the Owner – how do I make Him the Owner?

Nice questions but we coaches are famous for questions that we sometimes have no answer to (like #3).  In my experience the answer to question #1 is usually “God”.  The answer to question #2 is usually revolves around “good question” or “I don’t know” or “I don’t want to talk any more”.  Question 3 caused me more problems.  So I asked God about it and this is what I got:

  1. If God is the Owner of my life/business then I am the Steward.
  2. If God is the Owner then He gets to make “Owner Decisions”.
  3. If I am the Steward then I get to make “Steward Decisions”.

Pretty simple right?  So what constitutes “Owner Decisions” versus “Steward Decisions”?  Well that’s not a difficult question.  Owners set the purpose and vision for a company.  Owners make sure the Stewards have the right resources, knowledge, capital, direction etc.  Stewards on the other hand are responsible for carrying our the Owners direction skillfully, effectively, diligently, honestly, justly etc.  We Stewards are to be committed to ACTION while fully supporting the Owners purpose, vision and direction.  Stewards do not own the outcome. That is the Owners job (see “Whose Business is it Anyway” ebook).

When I finally got this concept straight in my head I began to notice an interesting thing.  Whenever I was personally in a bad place I was almost always dealing with “Owner Decisions”.  Things like:

  1. There isn’t enough money (God)?
  2. I don’t know how to do this (God)?
  3. How am I going to dig myself out of this?
  4. Is my direction for my business correct? (notice the “my’s”, using “I” or “My” all the time is a sure sign God doesn’t own our life)

When I forced myself to focus on “Steward Decisions” things improved.  Things like:

  1. Did I complete my Vital Activities today? (those things that if I do them daily cause me to move forward)
  2. Was I diligent with what I could do today?
  3. Is there a way I can do my assignment better?
  4. Did I manage my “Avoidance Behaviors” today? (those things we hate to do but must do)

My encouragement to you is to start asking yourself this question daily: “Is what I am currently doing an Owner or Steward activity?”  If it is an Owner activity give it to God and look for His Intersections in your life.  If it is a Steward activity do it with diligence and a serving heart being fully present in the moment.  I look forward to your comments.

Think well and find God!

Mark
